Department of Fruit Science

GENESIS

·   Established as a statutory department of Kerala Agricultural University by bifurcation of the erstwhile Department of Pomology and Floriculture, College of Horticulture on 31.12.2016.

·   Research, extension and teaching in fruits started in 1972 in the Department of Pomology and Floriculture, College of Horticulture.

VISION/ OBJECTIVE

·      Creation of professionals accomplished in skills, knowledge and technology in Fruit Science through research and academics.

·      Provide technology, products and services to the fruit industry through basic and applied research.

MANDATE
1. Conduct of academic programmes in Fruit Science for undergraduate, Post Graduate and Ph.D. students.

2. Undertaking research on different avenues of Fruit Science.

FACILITIES
I. Field gene banks

1. College orchard

College orchard (area-15ha) of College of Agriculture is being maintained by the Department of Fruit Science and is a repository of fruit crops with 24 blocks each with wide variety of fruits resulting in diversity. Blocks of novel fruits 1 and 2, fruit scaping, subtropical and temperate fruits, fruit nutrition garden, avocado, Garcinia, minor fruits 1,2 & 3, dragon fruit 1 and 2, abiu, , sapota, Annona, jaboticaba, guava, jackfruit, rambutan and mango A, B, C, D & E, all together constituting of 155 fruit types.

2. Mango orchard

In 1992-1993, a Mango Research Centre was established as a component of the State Plan Project in the mango orchard, with a total of 155 genotypes. The mango orchard upholds an area of 10 hectares demarcated into 5 different blocks (Block 1, Block 2, Alphonso Block, Priyur Block and HDP Block). A demonstration block on “High density planting in mango” is being maintained at 3 x 3m spacing with 6 mango varieties (Mallika, Ratna, Prior, Vellaikolumban, Muvandan, Chandrakaran). As a part of a state plan project on native mangoes, mango varieties native to Kerala were collected and mango grafts were raised and maintained in containers for evaluation.

II. Laboratory

One field laboratory was constructed as a part of 100 crore project which is being utilized by the PG, Ph.D. students for carrying out their laboratory work. PG laboratory is fully equipped with cabinets, chemicals, glasswares and equipments required for the smooth conduct of the research work on fruits.

III. Additional Facilities

As part of State Plan Projects, a net house (462 m²), glass house (58 m²), polyhouse (336 m²), 2 mist chambers (44 m²) and 6 rain shelters (357 m²) were constructed, renovated and maintained for research purpose and for production of planting materials.

TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED

§  Induction of flowering and improvement of yield in adult mango trees (>15 years old) by application of Paclobutrazol @ 5.0 g/tree (Cultar 20 ml/tree)

o   Time of application: September avoiding rainy periods

o   Method of application: Dilute the recommended quantity in 10 L of water and drench the soil at about 60 cm (2 feet) away from the base of the tree trunk

Banana

·         Standardized the dose of nitrogen in rainfed banana cv. Palayankodan

·         Standardized the pre- and post-harvest treatments for improving the shelf life and quality of banana Musa (AAB) ‘Nendran’

·         Standardized the dose of potassium in rainfed banana cv. Palayankodan

·         Standardized the dose of nitrogen and potassium in rain fed banana, Musa (AAB) ‘Mysore’

·         Conducted a study to access the performance of clonal progenies from different yield groups and their relation to size of suckers in rainfed banana Musa (AAB group) “Palayankodan”

·         Studied the effect of growth regulators and certain formulations on bunch development in banana var. Palayankodan

·         Standardized the sucker size for banana Musa (AAB), ‘Mysore’                                                

·         Standardized the concentration of 2,4- D and Navras Banana special for improved yield in banana

·         Conducted the pollen morphology, fertility and compatibility studies in banana

·         Conducted inter clonal hybridization in banana leading to the release of two hybrids, BRS 1 and BRS 2

·         Conducted studies on cytomorphological evaluation of banana hybrids and embryo culture of banana

·         Pattern of root activity in banana under irrigated and rainfed conditions were studied to identify the most active root zone

·         Split application of fertilizers in banana Musa (AAB) ‘Nendran’ was standardized

EXTENSION SERVICES

·         Field visits/ Exposure visits: A large number of farmers and students are visiting the college and mango orchard attached to the department almost throughout the year for getting familiarized with different types of fruit plants and to understand the various aspects of fruit cultivation and also the propagation techniques

·         Seminars/ Trainings: Scientists are actively engaged in taking classes for the farmers in various training programmes and seminars conducted within the university and also by the state department of agriculture. Scientists has also attended seminars both at the national level and international level to present and exhibit research ideas and ideologies.

·         Webinars: A webinar was organized by the department as 12 seminars covering major and novel fruit plants for creating awareness among the public and farmers during the Covid pandemic period.

·         Exhibitions/ Shows: Technologies related to various aspects of fruit production are being showcased in agri-exhibitions, mango fiesta, fruit fest, exhibition organized as a part of golden jubilee celebration of the college, flower shows, seminars etc.

·         FAS: Farm advisory service (FAS) is being conducted on all days either in person, through phone or by field visits
